Penny Drop Moments a Plenty….

Monday saw me attending my 5th mentoring session with Internationally acclaimed photographer Damian “Big Dog” McGillicuddy.  Being mentored not only takes the shape of improving current skills but most importantly learning new skills and business advice.  I always come away from my sessions totally inspired with a head full of ideas.  Part of Mondays session was all about reflection, not as in mirror reflection but personal goals and ambitions and I certainly came away with the bit between my teeth and raring to take my photography to whole new level.

After lunch was a practical session re enforcing previously covered lighting styles but as always Damian throws in a little gem of a new technique and without doubt this little gem was a diamond.  We used a amazing beauty photographer technique to take portraits.  This technique really is unique and is one that I can only imagine is a little trade secret.

Well I couldn’t wait to try out this new lighting style so I arranged a shoot with Annabel immediately.  For any photographers that follow my blog, to create the lighting for the image of Annabel below I used a Nikon SB900 flash gun fired into (with a twist) the fantastically versatile Damian McGillicuddy 36″ Beauty Dish.  For the photographer on go this series of dishes which come three sizes 19″, 36″ and 48″ are amazing due to them being collapsible and so easy to store away and no fear of them falling over and being dented.  Trust me mine have had a few bumps and still produce beautiful lighting.

Annie’s Portrait Session serves up a Silver Award…

As I’m sure those of you that follow my blog or the Trev Wilson Photography Facebook page will know that Im part of a very  lucky select group of photographers that are being mentored and trained by Damian McGillicuddy.  So it was after my third mentoring session that Damian told us our “homework” was to put into practice what we’d learnt so far and impress him.  Since starting the Mentoring course I’ve certainly been looking at my photography in a whole new way.  I get inspiration from all sorts of places and once I get a concept in my head I try to picture the final image and then construct it.  How to light it, props required, styling etc etc oh and not forgetting the model.

So it was after some initial positive feedback from you guys on seeing Annie’s images on Facebook I decided to enter the fourth image here in the Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers monthly competition.  The competition runs for 12 months with tens of thousands of entries covering all genres of photography.  I selected the Contemporary Portrait category for November.  It was my only entry, so I was extremely pleased to be awarded a Silver award.  The category had a total of 96 entries of which 12 gained a silver.

Amy, Paige & Daniel – R KOOL KIDZ….

Kool Kidz Portrait Sessions

Do your kids always come home with the same old boring school photograph ? I know mine do and I always say “why did you pull a face like that” and the usual response is “I was there for 5 seconds and the man made me say cheese”   At Trev Wilson Photography we like to create a portrait that not only the parents love to display on the wall but also the kids want them on the wall because they look cool.  So no mum’s flattening down fringes on these sessions.  Its all about the kidz looking Kool and feeling Kool.  Each session comes with a complimentary strut mounted print with the option to purchase further prints, enlargements, canvasses and framed prints.  Times and dates are booking up fast so give us a call to arrange a session:-)
