Monday saw me attending my 5th mentoring session with Internationally acclaimed photographer Damian “Big Dog” McGillicuddy. Being mentored not only takes the shape of improving current skills but most importantly learning new skills and business advice. I always come away from my sessions totally inspired with a head full of ideas. Part of Mondays session was all about reflection, not as in mirror reflection but personal goals and ambitions and I certainly came away with the bit between my teeth and raring to take my photography to whole new level.
After lunch was a practical session re enforcing previously covered lighting styles but as always Damian throws in a little gem of a new technique and without doubt this little gem was a diamond. We used a amazing beauty photographer technique to take portraits. This technique really is unique and is one that I can only imagine is a little trade secret.
Well I couldn’t wait to try out this new lighting style so I arranged a shoot with Annabel immediately. For any photographers that follow my blog, to create the lighting for the image of Annabel below I used a Nikon SB900 flash gun fired into (with a twist) the fantastically versatile Damian McGillicuddy 36″ Beauty Dish. For the photographer on go this series of dishes which come three sizes 19″, 36″ and 48″ are amazing due to them being collapsible and so easy to store away and no fear of them falling over and being dented. Trust me mine have had a few bumps and still produce beautiful lighting.
